Can You Eat Chocolate Before Bed?
You're standing in the kitchen at nine o'clock, a square of dark chocolate in your hand, wondering if you're about to trade a small pleasure for a long night. It's a fair question — chocolate does contain caffeine, and anyone selling you a bedtime chocolate who doesn't say so plainly isn't telling you the whole story.
So here is the whole story, with the actual numbers.
Yes, dark chocolate contains caffeine
According to USDA FoodData Central (entry #170273, "Chocolate, dark, 70–85% cacao solids"), dark chocolate in that range carries about 80 mg of caffeine per 100 grams — roughly 23 mg per ounce. A single square is typically a third to a half of that ounce, so call it 8–12 mg per square.
For scale: the FDA's consumer guidance on caffeine puts a typical 12-ounce cup of regular brewed coffee at 113 to 247 mg, and cites 400 mg a day as the amount not generally associated with negative effects for most adults. An evening square of dark chocolate sits at about one-twentieth of a modest coffee. Not zero. Not coffee, either.
What about theobromine?
Chocolate's more abundant stimulant is actually theobromine — about 802 mg per 100 grams in that same USDA entry, ten times the caffeine. The name sounds ominous, but the human evidence is reassuring: in a double-blind trial published in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology (Judelson et al., 2013), theobromine at doses of 100–400 mg — the range you'd meet in food — failed to measurably affect mood or vigilance, while a 100 mg dose of caffeine clearly did. Theobromine is chemically caffeine's cousin, but at chocolate doses it doesn't behave like a stimulant you'd notice.
The timing question, honestly
The best-known study on caffeine timing is blunt. Researchers gave people 400 mg of caffeine — a very large coffee's worth — at bedtime, three hours before, and six hours before, and measured their sleep:

Read the dose before you panic: that finding comes from 400 mg — the caffeine in roughly a pound of dark chocolate. Nobody's evening ritual looks like that. The study tells you why an afternoon cold brew wrecks your night; it does not say a 10 mg square at nine o'clock will. The honest translation for chocolate: if you know you're caffeine-sensitive — if a square of dark chocolate at 10pm genuinely keeps you staring at the ceiling — give yourself a margin and make it an after-dinner ritual, 60–90 minutes before bed, rather than a pillow-side one. For most people, the dose is simply too small to matter.
Who should actually be careful
- The genuinely caffeine-sensitive. The FDA notes that sensitivity varies widely with body weight, medications, and individual chemistry. If half a cup of afternoon tea reaches your sleep, chocolate's 8–12 mg per square can too. You are the person the timing advice is for.
- The "whole bar at midnight" evening. Three ounces of 85% chocolate is ~70 mg of caffeine — real coffee territory. The serving, not the chocolate, is the variable.
- Milk-chocolate grazers, relax. Milk chocolate carries far less cacao, and correspondingly less caffeine, than the dark bars discussed here.
